Form IV is another of the more popular styles among the Lucasian Order and others who have trained in the forms. Many have considered it to be most represenative of their style of lightsabre combat, and one that many of the younger Jedi tend to like training in. It's become another of the main pillars of Lucaisan stye fighting, and most, if not all Lucasian Jedi have a decent amount of skill in this Form.
The most acrobatic, kinetic, and in the minds of many, the most graceful of the Forms, Form IV works on a theory of moving in circles. It borrows greatly from a lot of chinese blade arts, mostly in spins, leaping attacks, and circular motions. Almost everything has to involve a rotation in some way, be it the path of the foot work, spinning around, fliping through the air while attacking, as well as circular attacks, ie circular swings and twirls of the lightsabre. Dramatic and daring at times, it can be very beautiful and exciting to watch in action. The constant movement that this style demands from it's user tends to open up many different angles of attack, as the fighter moves around the opponent. Also, Form IV fighters usually draw deeply into the Force to perform many of the gymnastic movements and swift attacks, making them even more formidible. Their lightsabres become whirling cyclones of lethal energy.
Form IV was one of the first styles to be developed, and was widly used by many Lucasian Jedi, as well as others who interacted with them. One can see why it was so easily adopted by many. Not only was it a visually attractive style, but its constant motion and wide circular movements made it particularly effective in mass combat, when one usually has to deal with multiple foes. It has techniques that can easily be used to target more than one opponent, and the constant movement allows the fighter to keep from being boxed in, cornered, or trapped by enemies. Experts of this style tend to be all over the battlefield, and some masters have been said to be nothing but blurs of motion and light at times.
This is not to say that Form IV is the ultimate style of the Lucansian tradition; it still has its weaknesses. It's major one is its nature of attacks in particular; at times one tends to leave themselves wide open with certain strikes. Many times this author has seen fighters who will come in with a wide slash, when a stab or lunging strike would have been more suitible. Form IV fighters have a major need to focus their style's circular attacks. While moving about and using lots of circular swings can work well against a group, they won't be as effective agianst just one foe. More than those who focus on the other Forms, those who specialize in IV need to learn to concentrate their attacks, and not leave themselves open. This means putting some more defensive techniques and motions into their style, probably from Form III. Also, the combat mindset of many Form IV fighters centers on constant leaping about and huge, sometimes overly fancy movements. They tend to have a harder time realizing that it is the mind that ultimately wins swordfights, not just agility and speed. One shouldn't just attack, they need to attack with the right technique.
Form IV's influence on overall Lucasian fighting is very strong. all the forms seem to have captured some of it's flavor. Indeed, it is their quintessential lightsabre fighting style, and one that almost all jedi have at least seen, if not dabbled in. Virtually every Academy has at least the basics and one sequence from it to train students in. It is a good style to learn, and one can gain a lot from it's practice. As long as one learns to make it's movements work well in combat, and chose the right movements for the right situation, they will be formidible, as the Form IV masters of old were.
