This is the basic form of Lucasian Jedi-style fighting, and the one all
Lucasians learn first. In Star Wars lore, Form I taught the basic strikes,
blocks, parries, and other fencing moves. The real version does the same
thing, but is more than simply a beginner's form. It is the basis for all
the other forms, and is powerful enough to be relied on exclusively.
Form I is based on the ancient arts of kenjitsu and European broadsword.
It uses all the basics from these styles and seamlessly blends them into
one coherent fighting form. It also makes good use of fundamental blaster
deflection techniques. There are virtually no fancy movements or "advanced
techniques". A Form I practitioner relies on basic, tried-and-true tactics.
Surprisingly for some, these are quite effective. It is a grunt style of
sabreplay. It isn't awe-inspiring, but it accomplishes the objective: keep
the Jedi in question in one piece until the end of the battle.
Form I is the style of choice for practical-minded Jedi, or for those
whose talents lie in other areas. Jedi pilots, up to and including aces,
favor it as well, due to the fact that they spend the majority of their time
learning and polishing their flying skills. Non-Jedi also train in this form,
as it is one of the easier styles for non-Jedi to learn. It doesn't rely
much on the Force for assistance. However, when Jedi use this Form, their
ability to use the Force makes it even more effective.
Because it is a basic, "meat and potatoes" style, Form I can work in virtually
any combat situation. Unfortunately, a well-trained practitioner in another
form or style of fighting can overwhelm the practitioner, so it is not a
Form favored against a master swordsman. As usual, there are exceptions to
this rule, but as they are in the vast minority, we will discuss them later.
